2. Measure and remove organics

Choose a site that drains well and if possible has a natural slope for drainage.

Level the arena area

3. Level area

When you have reached a solid base such as clay. Have the area leveled and sloped to 1% grade to the lowest point. Depending on how much you have removed from the site you will need to build it back up with a compactable aggregate such as pit run. This is an inexpensive way to build your subsurface back up to ground level.

add road crush or limestone

4. Add road crush or limestone

Next you will add 3/8″ road crush or limestone screenings. This layer will take a beating from your horses hooves. This need to be as close to 100% compacted as possible. Sloped to 1% and laser leveled. Depending on the traffic in your arena the road crush should be approximately 4-6″ It may also be called stone dust. You do not want this layer to break up and render your footing too deep.
